If you’re shopping for the best outdoor toys for a 2-year-old boy, I’ve got you covered—straight from the backyard of a boy who’s spent almost every warm weather day outdoors.

My son has a summer birthday, which means we’ve now experienced all the stages of being 2 outside…from newly 2 to almost 3. These are our favorite outdoor toys and the items that have made our backyard feel like a play zone during the warmer months.

These outdoor toy picks are based on our real-life experience with our son, but every one of them would be just as fun and useful for any 2-year-old who loves to play outside.

Our Favorite Outdoor Toys:

Turtle sandbox

Sandbox

We lucked out with a hand-me-down sandbox this year (the classic turtle one!), and it’s been one of his go-to outdoor activities. He fills up dump trucks, scoops with shovels, and basically treats it like a construction site. We’ve added these cheap sand toys from Walmart, and it’s already provided hours of fun.

PSA: Set your sandbox in a shaded area before filling it!

You’ll notice these classic Melissa & Doug wooden blocks in our sand box. Perfect for indoor & outdoor play.

Water Table

We got our water table just before he turned a year old, and two years later, it’s still going strong. Ours is technically a sand-and-water combo table, but we’ve always just filled both sides with water. It has spinning wheels that he loves, and we’ve added things like little boats and measuring cups, (great idea to scoop these random extras up when you see them at a garage sale). This looks like a fun option (and has high ratings) to incorporate sand, water, spinners and scoops!

This gets bonus points for keeping us cool!

Kiddie Pool

We recently picked out this small kiddie pool together after his first time doing swimming lessons were a no-go last year. It’s been such a win! He loves “helping” fill it, splashing around, and it’s the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

We also grabbed a Mickey life jacket before a recent trip up north and, to my surprise, he loved wearing it. I think little things like this are helping him feel more confident around water and hopefully setting us up for smoother swimming lessons in the future.

Why it’s great: Low-pressure water fun that you can set up quickly and use again and again.

Playhouse

We found a Little Tykes plastic playhouse being given away on Facebook, and it’s been such a big hit. It’s the perfect size for him without taking up much room in the yard. He loves involving the whole family in his pretend play and showing it off to anyone that comes over.

Now that I’ve seen how often it’s used, I can confidently say, if you’re on the fence about buying one, it’s worth the splurge. This is the one I had been watching to see if it’d go on sale or if I could find it on Marketplace.

Balance Bike

It took him a little time to get the hang of it, but our balance bike ended up being such a great way to teach that practice really does pay off. Now that he’s mastered it, it gets a lot of use and it’s the best thing watching him cruise down the sidewalk with confidence.

Mud Kitchen (DIY Style)

We made a mud kitchen out of old pallets and set it up with real kitchen items we weren’t using (bowls, measuring cups, ladles, etc). He uses grass, sticks, water, and whatever else he can find to “cook” with. This is one of those toys that’s only limited by imagination and is great for kids of all ages.

Cozy Coupe

I don’t know what it is about this little red car, but it’s been a favorite for generations. My son will hop in and take off like he’s got places to be. This was another hand-me-down for us, which just proves that outdoor fun doesn’t have to be new or flashy. Just give kids the tools to spark their imagination and let them take it from there.

Bubble Lawn Mower

He pushes it around while we mow the real lawn or just takes it for a spin to see the bubbles. It’s simple, it’s fun, and sneaks in some physical activity.

Honorable Mentions: Chalk, Bubbles & A Kite

You can’t go wrong with classics like a bubble machine (or these bubble wands), sidewalk chalk, and kites. They’re inexpensive, easy to replace, and so much fun.

This Mickey kite has survived four flying sessions and is still going strong. For under $2, I can’t believe it—and it looks so cute up in the air!

If you’re shopping for a gift or prepping your backyard for a busy toddler, these are the things I’d recommend again and again. Nothing flashy…just a mix of hand-me-downs, DIY setups, and intentional picks that encourage real play, fresh air, and memory-making.

Let me know if you’ve found any outside toys that are a staple for backyard fun at your household. I’m always on the lookout for what to try next!
