Travel from Sauk County: Havens Petting Farm & Mount Horeb, WI

If you’re looking for a fun and easy day trip with kids, this one’s a great option. We made the short drive to Blue Mounds and Mount Horeb and spent the day grabbing coffee, visiting animals, and enjoying a relaxing lunch and sweet treat.
Our main stop was Havens Petting Farm, a hands-on farm experience that’s perfect for families. But we also found a few nearby spots that helped fill out the rest of the day. If you’re planning a family outing and want something kid-friendly without a long drive, here’s a look at how we spent our day.
Havens Petting Farm

From the moment you pull in, it feels welcoming and super kid-friendly. You’ll spot a pen of turkeys and ride-on tractors right away, and as you get your tickets, you’re already surrounded by animals, wandering cats waiting to be pet, and photo opps galore.
You can walk right into many of the pens and get up close with goats, chickens, ducks, bunnies, and more—there’s even a zebra on the property! There’s food available to feed the animals, ropes for swinging in the hay loft, and a corn pit for digging. Yard games and toy tractors are scattered throughout the space, so there’s always something to explore.
Everything is spaced out nicely…open enough to feel relaxed, but not so spread out that little legs get tired walking from one thing to the next. Kids can run, climb, and just be kids.
They also offer a mobile petting zoo that you can book for birthday parties or other events, which would be such a hit with little ones.
Obert Alvin Coffee House
If you’re making the drive, we definitely recommend a few other stops nearby to round out the day. We grabbed coffee at Obert Alvin Coffee House in Blue Mounds, which is inside a restored 1868 Historic Opera House. It was such a fun stop. You can even walk upstairs and peek at the event space where Houdini once performed back in the 1920s.
Brix Cider

After the farm, we headed to Mount Horeb for a late lunch at Brix Cider. It’s a true farm-to-table spot, with two-thirds of the ingredients sourced from Wisconsin farmers. Everything we’ve ordered there has been amazing. They have outdoor seating that’s perfect for families, and the inside space is roomy and very kid-friendly.
Sugar Troll
And we always finish our trip with a visit to Sugar Troll for gelato. Their flavors are delicious, and they have a fun mix of nostalgic candy and sweets to browse.
If you’re looking for a low-key, fun-filled day trip with kids, visiting Havens Petting Farm (and maybe making a few extra stops along the way!) is a great choice. Check their Facebook or website for hours and updates before you go, and enjoy the slower pace and hands-on fun this sweet farm has to offer.
About the Sponsor:
Havens Petting Farm is a family-run farm in Blue Mounds, WI, where kids and families can connect with animals and get a hands-on look at farm life. Owners Logan and Sarah Havens moved back to Logan’s childhood farm in 2010 and soon realized they wanted to share that same experience with others.
Today, families can visit and walk right into the pens with goats, bunnies, pigs, and more. Depending on the time of year, you might see baby animals, milk a goat, or even catch a sheep shearing demonstration.
The farm is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 AM to 5 PM, with admission just $10 per person (kids under 2 are free). You’ll also find Havens at many local events throughout the year. For current hours, event details, or to plan your visit, check out their website.
