Meet a Local Certified Professional Midwife: A Q&A with Deanna of A Little Moore Midwifery
Families in our area have a range of preferences when it comes to pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care, including the option of giving birth at home. I recently connected with a Certified Professional Midwife based in Wonewoc who serves families throughout Sauk County.
In this Q&A, she shares more about her path to midwifery, the care she provides for families planning home births or collaborative hospital births, and what families can expect when working with her.
As a mother of six, she brings both professional training and personal experience to supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
This is a sponsored Q&A shared to help inform local families about available birthing options.
Tell us a little about yourself and your midwife practice.
My name is Deanna Moore, my midwifery practice is A Little Moore Midwifery, and I live in Wonewoc, WI.
I have been a Certified Professional Midwife since March of 2024. I started as a student midwife in 2021, and before that I was a birth doula and perinatal educator.
I serve families in our community who are seeking out-of-hospital birth or collaborative care with a midwife if they are planning to have a hospital birth.
I have 6 children, ranging in ages from 17 down to 3. Fun fact: I have been changing diapers for over 17 years straight!
We have two dogs, two cats, and too many chickens! I am married to my most favorite person and biggest supporter, Andrew.
What services do you offer and what areas do you serve?

Midwifery services are so diverse for each family! Most families hire me to be their midwife and provide all their prenatal care, attend their birth at home, and all of the postpartum care for both mother and baby.
Some families are just looking for prenatal care or postpartum care in their own home, and are planning a hospital birth.
Additional services include preconception counseling, lab tests, and fertility testing for both partners.
I am also certified in IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) for those growing their family in a different way.
I also teach a 1-on-1 childbirth education class for families expecting their first baby.
I serve families within an hour and a half radius of my home so that includes Juneau County, Sauk County, Vernon County, Monroe County, and Richland County.
What should families know about home birth as an option?
That it’s an amazing birth option for low risk pregnancies!! Certified Professional Midwives are highly trained for normal, physiological labor and birth, and we have extensive training for emergencies.
We carry a lot of equipment and medication to help support a safe home birth and keep mamas and babies safe at home. I am CPR and NRP certified, as well as being a Spinning Babies Certified Birth Professional.
Homebirth is a wildly different experience from hospital birth! Most of the time, I can be very hands off, and we only do what you want…no vaginal exams? Cool! Pushing in whatever position you want? Awesome! No IV – no problem! Delayed cord clamping? Of course! You get to relax in your own space and move however you want. My husband often jokes with new dads that “you don’t even have to wear pants!”
I also think it’s good to know that we can do all of the same prenatal lab work/testing as a hospital based provider. You aren’t skipping labs/screenings/ultrasounds (unless you want to!) just because you choose a home birth with a midwife. This goes for baby testing as well after they are born.
Also, as a Licensed Midwife in Wisconsin we can serve VBACs, breech, and twins at home!!
What makes your approach unique?
I think what makes care with me unique is my background. With my 6 pregnancies, I was very blessed to experience a variety of births – 3 of my babies were born in hospital, 1 was an induction, 1 was precipitous (very fast), 1 was super long (28 hours), 3 were home births. I have experienced hemorrhages at home as well, I formula fed a baby, I breastfed other babies, and I pumped at work. I have experienced a lot, so I feel I have a lot of empathy when things are tough or plans need to change.
Before becoming a midwife, I worked in a hospital laboratory for 15 years. With that experience I am not only pretty good at drawing blood and starting IV’s, but I have been a part of lots of medical emergencies and work well in those settings.
Another unique piece of home birth is that all your care happens in your own home on your own schedule! You don’t have to find a sitter or take off work early to have an appointment.
What can families expect when working with you?
Families can expect lots of laughter, casual visits at home, and tons of information, if they want it!
I love when older siblings get to participate in visits and I love when families have lots of questions. Families can expect to be well cared for with individualized care from one medical provider. Nobody slips through the cracks with home based midwifery care.
Families can expect that I will be attending their birth. Since home birth midwives usually only take a few clients a month, I make sure I am available when I am on call. This also applies to hospital transfers, I would attend as a doula if necessary.
Do you offer postpartum support?
Standard care for families that hire me is after the baby is born we usually stay about 3 hours postpartum. Checking on mom and baby and making sure everything stays normal. Then we do a 24 hour visit, 72 hour visit, 2 week, 4 week and 6 week visits. I help with establishing breastfeeding, and monitoring mom and baby for any postpartum complications. And of course I am always available by phone for questions!
What is the cost of a home birth with a midwife?
There are a few different ways to pay for a home birth midwife. My full fee is $3800 and I offer a sliding scale for those with financial need. All prenatal visits, postpartum care, labs, birth class, supplies for water birth are included in the fee. Most families are cash pay, but I also accept BadgerCare insurance which covers the majority of my fee, and some families will use HSA or HCSM towards home birth costs.
