9 Low-Maintenance Indoor Plants For Busy Moms

Hey Plant Pals,

Mom life has taken a toll on my once-impressive green thumb. The flourishing plants of yesteryear? Well, they’re more in a ‘survival’ mode these days. 🌿 But hey, indoor plants still spark joy, and I’m doing my best.

To keep it real, let’s focus on the indestructible ones—my kind of plant BFFs. They thrive, I forget, repeat. Ready for the low-maintenance houseplant squad? Let’s roll.

Easy, Popular Houseplants

Snake plant

Snake Plants (Sansevieria):

A snake plant, also known as Sansevieria or Mother-in-law’s Tongue, is a fantastic choice for plant newbies. This hardy and low maintenance plant thrives in various lighting conditions, making it adaptable to both indirect, bright light and lower light settings. Its striking upright leaves have earned it the nickname “snake plant” due to their sleek, elongated appearance.

The best thing? One of the snake plant’s superpowers is its resilience to forgetful watering. It doesn’t need much water and prefers to dry out between watering sessions, so a light touch with the watering can every 2-4 weeks is usually sufficient, especially in the winter months (when you probably could go towards the longer end). This makes it an excellent option for those who may not have the greenest thumb. The snake plant is also known for its air-purifying qualities, removing toxins from the air, making it a functional and stylish addition to any space.

A Snake Plant’s leaves do contain a toxin, so it should be kept out of reach of children or furry friends who may be tempted to nibble.

ZZ Plants (Zamioculcas zamiifolia):

The ZZ plant, scientifically known as Zamioculcas zamiifolia, is a top-notch choice for plant newbies seeking a low-maintenance companion. This resilient plant is celebrated for its ability to thrive in low-light conditions, making it a perfect fit for spaces with minimal natural light. Its glossy, dark green leaves add a touch of elegance to any room.

One of the standout features of the ZZ plant is its tolerance for irregular watering. This plant prefers to dry out between waterings, so a light touch with the watering can every 2-3 weeks is generally sufficient. This forgiving nature makes it an ideal option for those laid back plant parents. Additionally, the ZZ plant is renowned for its air-purifying qualities, enhancing the overall air quality in your home while requiring minimal effort on your part.

Better Homes & Gardens reports, “…all parts of this plant are poisonous” so be sure to handle with care. Washing your hands after touching should be sufficient, but displaying on a table or shelf out of reach of kiddos and house pets is important.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum):

A Pothos plant is a beloved green companion for plant newbies, offering both versatility and hardiness. This plant, scientifically known as Epipremnum aureum, thrives in various lighting conditions, making it adaptable to different spaces within your home.

Pothos is celebrated for its hardy nature, forgiving those occasional lapses in the watering routine. You’ll find it to be quite resilient, tolerating both underwatering and overwatering with grace. To keep this green gem content, aim for watering when the top inch of the soil feels dry. The easiest way to know it’s been too long between waterings is to keep an eye on the leaves. Your plant will become wilty and droopy looking overnight, but, good news, a good watering will do the trick!

Besides its forgiving nature, Pothos is recognized for its ability to purify indoor air, making it a functional and aesthetically pleasing addition to your space. With its cascading vines, Pothos can be a decorative touch, whether placed on a shelf, in a hanging basket, or on a tabletop. The combination of low-maintenance care and decorative appeal makes Pothos a fantastic choice for those starting their plant journey.

While you may have more peace of mind with a Pothos, because coming in contact with its leaves shouldn’t cause irritation, it should still be kept away from little ones that put everything in their mouth and our four-legged friends because “eating them can cause burning and swelling of lips, tongue, and throat” along with other unpleasant reactions.

Spider Plants (Chlorophytum comosum):

A Spider Plant is an ideal companion for plant beginners seeking both elegance and simplicity. Also known as Chlorophytum comosum, this plant adds a touch of charm to your space with its arching leaves and spiderette offshoots.

The Spider Plant is known for its adaptability and resilience, making it an excellent choice for various indoor environments. It can thrive in both bright, indirect sunlight and lower light conditions, making it versatile for different rooms in your home.

One of the Spider Plant’s unique features is its ability to produce spiderettes, small offshoots that dangle from the mother plant like tiny spiders on a web. These can be propagated into new plants, providing you with the joy of watching your green family grow.

Caring for the Spider Plant is a breeze. Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy, allowing the top inch to dry out between waterings. This low-maintenance beauty is a perfect addition to your indoor garden, combining aesthetic appeal with ease of care for an enjoyable plant experience.

A Spider Plant is generally considered one of the child and pet-friendly plants.

Succulent plants on a table

Succulents:

Embracing the world of succulents is like diving into a realm of fascinating shapes, colors, and low-maintenance greenery. Succulents, including popular varieties like Aloe Vera plants, Jade Plant, and Echeveria, are known for their unique ability to store water in their thick, fleshy leaves.

These drought-resistant beauties thrive in bright, indirect light, making them versatile additions to your indoor space. Aloe Vera, celebrated for its soothing properties, is not only visually appealing but also a handy plant to have on hand for its gel-filled leaves.

Jade Plant, also known as the money tree, boasts vibrant green leaves and a charming tree-like structure. It’s a symbol of prosperity and good luck, making it a delightful addition to your home.

Echeveria, with its rosette-shaped arrangement of leaves, comes in various stunning colors, adding an artistic touch to your succulent collection. These plants prefer well-draining soil and occasional sunlight to maintain their vibrant hues.

The magic of succulents lies in their adaptability and resilience. Their minimal water requirements and striking appearance make them perfect companions for plant enthusiasts of all levels. And when we say minimal water, we mean they can go weeks without watering (actually encouraged in the Winter). So, whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or just starting your green journey, succulents are sure to bring joy and beauty to your indoor oasis.

Most succulents are kid and pet-friendly houseplants, however it is probably still a good idea to keep them out of reach because some have thorns or spikes.

Adaptable to light changes, Rubber Plants are the cool kids on the block with their large, glossy leaves. A hassle-free addition to your green gang.

This is a safer plant for pet owners with curious critters as it’s only considered toxic if a large amount of its leaves are consumed.

African Violets (Saintpaulia):

Meet the African Violet, a charming and compact flowering plant that captivates with its vibrant blooms and velvety leaves. Saintpaulia, commonly known as the African Violet, is a popular choice for indoor gardens, adding a splash of color and elegance to any space.

This petite beauty thrives in indirect light, making it perfect for placing on windowsills or in well-lit rooms. Its unique, fuzzy leaves and delicate flowers create a visual treat, and, with the right conditions, you’ll have beautiful blooms almost year-round.

When it comes to watering, African Violets prefer a gentle touch. They prefer consistent moist soil, but avoid water on the leaves to prevent spotting. To enhance their blooming potential, use a balanced fertilizer and ensure they’re shielded from drafts. They’re the divas that demand a little regular pampering.

A worry-free choice for human and pet parents as they do not contain dangerous chemicals.1
