Breast Milk Donations in Sauk County, Wisconsin
Recently, I’ve noticed an urgent need for breast milk donations in our community, with several moms in my group searching for options. This got me researching ways we can support each other, and while Sauk County doesn’t have a milk bank, I came across something incredible: the Milk Drop Depot at the Reedsburg Area Medical Center (RAMC) Birth Center.
This depot offers a convenient way for breastfeeding moms to donate extra milk, which is then sent to certified milk banks to be pasteurized and distributed to babies who need it most.
Why Breast Milk Donations Are So Important
Breast milk is a lifeline for many babies, especially those born prematurely or with medical challenges. For these tiny fighters, human milk provides critical nutrients and immune protection that formula can’t replicate.
Unfortunately, not all families can produce enough milk for their babies, and that’s where donations make a world of difference. If you’re a breastfeeding mom with an oversupply, donating can have an incredible impact on babies and families in need.
How to Donate Breast Milk at RAMC
The process is simple, and the team at RAMC makes it as easy as possible for donors:
1️⃣ Screening Process: Start by completing a health questionnaire and blood tests, all done free of charge right at RAMC.
2️⃣ Pumping & Storing: Once approved, you can pump and freeze your milk at home.
3️⃣ Drop-Off Made Easy: Bring your milk to the depot at RAMC whenever you’re ready to donate. Staff can even meet you at your car if you have little ones with you.
Your milk will be sent to a certified milk bank, where it undergoes pasteurization to ensure it’s safe for the most vulnerable babies, including those in NICUs.
How You Can Make a Difference
For breastfeeding moms with an oversupply, donating milk is a beautiful way to support other moms and babies in need. Every ounce counts, and your donation could save a life or provide comfort to a family during a challenging time.
Even if you’re not currently able to donate, please share this information with friends or family who might be interested. Together, we can spread awareness about this vital resource and ensure more babies get the nutrition they need to thrive.
