Merrimac Ferry in Lodi, WI

Riding the Merrimac Ferry: A Fun (and Free!) Summer Tradition for Families Near Sauk County

If you’re looking for something simple, fun, and a little different to do with your kids this summer, let me put this on your list… taking a ride on the Merrimac Ferry!

After riding it early last summer on our way to Lodi for strawberry picking, we found ourselves going out of our way to make it happen again multiple times. I know this will be a core memory for my son, and I love that.

It’s easy, free, and honestly… kids think it’s way more exciting than you’d expect.

What Is the Merrimac Ferry?

The Columbia County Merrimac Ferry is a ferry that takes you across Lake Wisconsin between Merrimac and Lodi. It’s the only free ferry in the state!

You drive right onto it, ride across the lake (it only takes a few minutes), and drive off on the other side.

That’s it. Simple. But somehow, it still feels like an adventure.

Why Kids Love It (and why we keep going back)

There’s just something about being on a boat (with your car) that makes it exciting. And there’s ice cream on both sides… which definitely helps.

What to Do on the Lodi Side

If you haven’t spent much time in Lodi, Wisconsin, it’s worth exploring a little.

Strawberry picking at Furger Family Farm

Last summer was our first time doing this and we will be back every year! The process was super simple and the berries were delicious. When you get there, you grab containers, they show you which rows to pick, and you’re off. When you’re done, they weigh your berries and you’re good to go!

Grab a coffee (or treat) at Buttercream Bakery in Lodi

They have an awesome kids area with toys, books, a train, etc., and couches to hang out.

Goeres Park

This is a great stop with space for kids to run around and play. It’s right along the water and they have basketball, pickleball, & tennis courts, a pool, plenty of room to run, picnic tables, and bathrooms. It’s a beautiful area!

Check out live music + lake vibes

During the summer, there’s usually live music happening at spots around Lake Wisconsin. If your kids enjoy music, it’s a fun, laid-back way to hang out on the deck.

Go for a hike

If you want to add a little more adventure, head over to Gibraltar Rock State Natural Area.

It’s a short enough hike to be doable with kids (depending on ages), and there are some great views!

Tips Before You Go

A few things to know before you head out:

  • It’s first come, first served, so you may have to wait during busy times
  • The ride itself is short (about 7 minutes)
  • It runs seasonally (typically spring through fall), but can close due to high winds or other conditions, so it’s worth checking before you go
  • It’s completely free
