Halloween-Themed Fun Ideas

If you’re looking to add some extra Halloween spirit, download our list of things to do in Sauk County in the fall, or try these activities:

  • Pumpkin painting: Skip the mess of carving and let kids get creative with paints, stickers, and other decorations on their pumpkins.
  • Spooky movie night: Set up an outdoor projector or get cozy indoors with Halloween-themed snacks and a lineup of age-appropriate spooky movies.
  • Halloween scavenger hunt: Instead of traditional trick-or-treating, set up a spooky scavenger hunt in your backyard or home where kids can find candy or small prizes.

Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips

While Halloween is all about fun, it’s important to keep safety in mind to ensure a spooktacular night. Here are a few tips to help keep your little ghosts and goblins safe:

  • Stay visible: Equip kids with glow sticks or reflective tape on their costumes to make sure they’re easily seen.
  • Stick together: Always trick-or-treat in groups, and make sure younger children are with a trusted adult.
  • Check candy before eating: Once you’re home, sort through your child’s candy and check for any open or unwrapped items before letting them dig in.
  • Stay on the sidewalk: Remind kids to walk, not run, and to use sidewalks when possible. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic and stay as close to the curb as you can.

General Halloween Safety

Make sure Halloween is fun and safe for everyone by keeping these general tips in mind:

  • Costume safety: Make sure costumes are flame-resistant, and avoid masks that obstruct vision. Consider face paint or makeup instead!
  • Safe props: If your child’s costume involves a prop, like a sword or broom, ensure it’s soft, flexible, and won’t cause injury if they fall.
  • Be mindful of allergies: Consider offering non-food treats like stickers or small toys for children with food allergies.

More Fall Fun

Looking for more fall-themed family fun? Sauk County and surrounding areas are packed with places to celebrate the season! Whether you’re looking for a pumpkin patch, caramel apples, a haunted house, or hopping on a festive train ride, there are a variety of spooktacular events to enjoy with your loved ones.

Pumpkin Patches: Head out to one of the local pumpkin farms to pick the best pumpkin you find. From corn mazes to hayrides, these patches offer a great time for the whole family.

Apple Orchards: Enjoy the crisp fall air while picking fresh apples straight from the orchard. Many local orchards also offer additional activities like cider tastings, farm animal encounters, and wagon rides.

Pumpkin Train Rides: This is the perfect fall activity if you have a little one that enjoys trains. Hop on a pumpkin train ride and see the enjoyment in their face.

No matter where you’re heading out for trick-or-treating this year, make sure you plan ahead to maximize your fun! With most city-wide trick-or-treat times set for Monday, October 31st, from 4PM to 7PM, you can make the most of the evening while keeping safety in mind. Whether you’re visiting a neighborhood, a local event, or hosting some Halloween fun at home, we hope you and your little ones have a spooktacular and safe time gathering all the candy you can!
