Why Podcasting is the Perfect Gig for Stay at Home Moms

Are you a mom who stays home with your kiddos but you would love to find a side hustle that can potentially bring in a little extra income for your family?

You might be asking yourself, “How am I supposed to fit anything else into my already jam packed schedule of managing a household?” I get it. Between diaper changes, to getting your littles fed, to taxiing them to and from all their activities, being a mom is one of the hardest full-time jobs you’ll ever have. But you deserve to have something just for yourself too. Enter podcasting.

How can podcasting be that thing that you call just your own? How can it bring in money for your family? And if you don’t know the first thing about technology, how can you even wrap your head around podcasting? Don’t worry, I was in your same exact shoes three years ago.

In the Fall of 2021, my husband and I’s first born son was about to turn two and I finally was beginning to feel like myself again. As a former professional ballerina I was longing to find a creative outlet of some sort that I could do from the comfort of my own home. Because, let’s face it, when you live in a rural community and you have kids, it’s just not easy to pop into any sort of open dance class whenever you want.

After reading the book Be. by Jessica Zweig, I was inspired to start my own podcast. But where was I to begin? I started watching videos on YouTube and listening to other podcasts about how to start a podcast and after a few months of rigorous research and lots of trial & error, I became a self-taught podcaster!

I hosted my own show called Pivot Ball Change which was for creative mamas to share their stories about how they found the time to practice their art form after becoming a mom. Within the first year of having my own podcast I was able to monetize it by reaching out and connecting with like-minded brands who sponsored my show.

I also quickly came to realize that the skill set of editing podcasts was a highly sought after and much needed one. I decided to pivot (ball change) and instead of hosting my own show, I started offering my editing services to other busy moms who hosted their own podcasts.

This is where my go-getter personality came in again and I started doing the hustle work of reaching out to dream clients who I wanted to work with. One of the biggest lessons I learned here was to not take no as a final answer. I was turned down several times before landing my first big client; the HERself podcast.

As they say, momentum is a beautiful thing. By utilizing social media, a self-built website, and referrals I was able to quickly build up my podcast editing business to the point where it was nearly matching my part-time corporate job in HR.

Today, I have transitioned into more of an agency model for my business where I have taken on a mentorship role and am now hiring editors to work on my team. While they do most of the editing these days, I am busy being the face of the brand, booking clients, am the head of communications, and get to work on the creative side of things which is ultimately my zone of genius.

So, if you’re a stay at home mom who is longing for something more, let my story be an inspiration to you.

Why not you? Why not podcasting? Maybe you want to start your own show or maybe you want to learn how to edit. It’s the perfect gig that you can do from the comfort of your own home while your baby is napping, after the kids go to bed, or maybe even in the wee hours of the morning while the rest of your house is still sleeping. Podcasting can be your special thing that belongs just to you. Do it for yourself, mama. You deserve it.
