Navigating the Final Weeks of Winter

This article is written by a Registered Nurse and local Sauk County mama! Read through her best tips for staying happy and nourished these last few weeks of winter.

Hello fellow Sauk County Moms! It’s hard to believe it’s already Groundhog Day, and thank goodness Punxsutawney Phil predicts an early spring! If you’re feeling like you’ve been reliving “Groundhog Day” (the movie with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell) and you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, I’m your friendly neighborhood nurse here with practical tips to help keep you and your kids healthy as we eagerly anticipate the warmer days ahead. Let’s bid farewell to our winter boots (soon!) and share some practical tips for thriving in these last weeks. No need for superhero capes; our daily mom hustle is impressive enough. So, let’s shift our focus from winter blues to the imminent arrival of a new season.

Real-World Meals for Late Winter Wellness:

Explore meals that warm the soul and boost immune systems. Opt for easy-to-make, nutrient-packed dishes like chicken noodle soup or chili loaded with beans and lean protein. Incorporate immune-boosting foods such as vitamin C-rich fruits and vitamin D-packed fatty fish as we countdown to spring. For a leaner version of your Friday Night Fish Fry, opt for baked or broiled instead of fried.

Hydration Tips and Immune Boosting:

Hydration remains our unsung hero against winter bugs. Ensure sippy cups are filled with water, herbal teas, or juice thinned with water. You can even warm up apple juice and sprinkle on some cinnamon to make it into a cozy cup of cider. Infuse water with citrus fruits for a refreshing twist and added vitamin C. Herbal teas like chamomile or ginger provide warmth with extra immune-boosting benefits as we transition towards warmer days.

Outdoor Adventures and Indoor Sanity Measures:

Embrace germ-free outdoor play with activities like hiking or exploring less crowded spaces. We are fortunate to have outdoor trails like the Riverwalk in Baraboo, the Dells or Sauk City, not to mention the many trails at Devil’s Lake, Mirror Lake, and more. Even if it’s just walking along the paved sidewalks and avoiding those icy bluffs for now. Indoors, encourage creative activities like DIY crafts to keep kids entertained while minimizing germ transmission and celebrating the approaching spring. The library and children’s museum are excellent places to play, but just remember to wash hands frequently, and keep your kiddos home if they’ve been under the weather.

Bedtime ritual

Bedtime Routine:

Simplify bedtime with cozy rituals for the kids and introduce a calming routine for yourself. Whether it’s meditation or a cup of herbal tea, finding your bedtime bliss contributes to a more restful night as we await the changing season.

Regular Health Checks:

Beyond routine check-ups, stay vigilant for signs of illness in the family. Unfortunately, we are still seeing lots of cases of RSV, influenza, and COVID-19 in the clinics. Address symptoms promptly and explore telehealth options for convenient healthcare connections from home, easing into the hopeful days of spring.

Nourish with Winter Superfoods:

Enhance your diet with seasonal superfoods like oranges, pomegranates, and sweet potatoes to boost your immune system.

Prioritize Self-Care:

Take a moment to focus on your own well-being. Schedule a check-up, prioritize sleep, and incorporate small moments of self-care into your routine. Whether it’s a brisk solo walk, a chapter of your favorite book, or a moment of meditation, investing in your health ensures you’re at your best for your family. Even 15 minutes a day or an hour each week can do wonders.

Connect with Others:

Plan activities with friends for emotional well-being, whether it’s a playdate with the kids,
getting coffee with a friend or neighbor, or even a phone call or virtual gathering.

As we eagerly anticipate the transition to spring, embrace these final weeks of Wisconsin Winter. By staying active, nourishing your body, prioritizing self-care, and fostering connections, you’ll not only navigate the remaining winter weeks successfully but
also create a fun and healthy environment for your family. Your well-being is a gift to both
yourself and your loved ones. Cheers to a late winter filled with health, happiness, and the promise of approaching spring!
