Travel from Sauk County: Cave of the Mounds with Kids

Finding family activities that feel both unique and doable with young kids can be tricky. If you’re looking for something a little different than the usual play place or museum, Cave of the Mounds is worth adding to your list. We visited during their seasonal Cave of Lights tour, and it turned out to be a really fun, low-pressure family outing.

Our Experience Visiting Cave of Lights With a Toddler

We visited during Cave of Lights, which runs from Thanksgiving through the end of January. The cave is decorated with subtle holiday lights that highlight the cave formations, mineral textures, and even tiny water droplets that naturally collect along the ceiling. The lights sparkle off the cave walls and (in our experience) really help kids stay engaged as you walk through.

The guided cave tour itself lasts about an hour which felt about 10 minutes too long for our toddler but overall he and all the other kids in our group did great! Our tour group had about 19 people, which felt manageable, and there were multiple tours running at once, so we didn’t have much of a wait.

Along the way, the guide shared interesting parts of the cave’s discovery, how it formed, and why it’s such a significant cave of the Upper Midwest. Even as an adult, I found the information genuinely interesting and not overly technical.

Kids 3 and under are free, which is a nice bonus if you’re visiting with little ones.

Cave of Lights with kids

Is Cave of the Mounds Good for Kids?

Short answer: yes—with realistic expectations.

Here’s what I think makes Cave of the Mounds with kids work well:

  • The path is paved and well-maintained (although there are a lot of steps)
  • The lighting keeps kids visually engaged (during Cave of Lights anyway…not sure what it’s like the rest of the year)
  • The tour is structured but not rushed or overly wordy
  • Guides are used to families and children

That said, it is a guided tour, so kids do need to stay with the group. If your child struggles with longer indoor activities or gets overwhelmed easily, this may not be the best option.

Visitor Center, Gift Shop, and Extras

You’ll start by purchasing tickets at the visitor center, which includes a gift shop. There’s also a small snack bar, which is helpful if you’re making this part of a longer day trip. In warmer months, consider checking out the short hiking trails around the visitor center with views of the nearby hills and designated picnic areas (consider packing your lunch!). If you plan to visit whe it’s warm, I also encourage you to check out Havens Petting Farm which is just down the road.

Hiking Trails at Cave of the Mounds (Kid-Friendly Bonus)

One thing I didn’t realize before our visit is that you get free access to some short hiking trails around the Cave of the Mounds visitor center, which makes it an even better option if you want to turn your trip into a half-day outing (when the weather is nicer).

The trails are manageable and don’t require climbing steep cliffs, which is a big plus if you’re visiting with kids. Learn more about the trails here.

If your kids need to burn off energy before or after the cave tour, these trails are a great add-on.

If you’re looking for fun things to do with kids in southern Wisconsin (especially something a little different) Cave of the Mounds is absolutely worth considering. Cave of Lights, in particular, adds an extra layer of magic that helps hold kids’ attention and makes the experience feel special.

For families near Madison, the Dells, or anyone looking for a unique day trip, this is a memorable option that both parents and kids can enjoy.

If you’ve been on the fence about visiting, I’d say it’s a great time to go, especially while Cave of Lights is still running.
