Family-Friendly Weekend in Viroqua, Wisconsin | Where to Stay, Eat, and Explore

Our stay at the Viroqua Heritage Inn was hosted. All opinions are my own.

If you’re looking for nearby places to visit from the Sauk County area, Viroqua, WI should absolutely be on your list. This charming Driftless town is incredibly walkable, full of locally owned shops and restaurants, and has just enough to do to make it feel special without being overwhelming with kids. It’s an easy, family-friendly weekend trip and I’m sharing our experience below.

Between the historic inn we stayed at, amazing local restaurants, parks, coffee shops, and other kid-friendly stops, it made for the perfect low-key family getaway.

Where to Stay: Viroqua Heritage Inn

We stayed at the Viroqua Heritage Inn, and it was one of the highlights of the trip.

The inn is made up of two beautifully restored 1890s historic homes, named after local founding residents, Eckhart and Boyle. From the moment we arrived, we knew this was going to be a memorable experience. The innkeeper, Monika, greeted us at the door, showed us around, and made check-in incredibly easy.

We chose a room with two beds so we had plenty of space with our toddler, and it worked perfectly for our family.

One of my favorite parts was the downstairs kitchen area, which guests can access anytime. Each morning they set out:

• Coffee from Wonderstate Coffee, a local favorite
• Fresh fruit
• Yogurt
• Hard-boiled eggs from their own chickens in the backyard
• Fresh sourdough bread from a French baker on the same block
• Cream, sugar, teas, and thoughtful touches throughout

It felt intentional and cared for.

Outside, there’s a backyard with chickens you can visit, a deck with seating, a gazebo, and a fire pit area. While we visited in winter, it’s easy to imagine how peaceful and relaxing it would be to enjoy coffee outside during warmer months.

The location is also ideal. It sits just one block from downtown Viroqua, which meant we parked our car when we arrived and didn’t need it again until we left.

If you love staying somewhere with character and thoughtful details, you might also enjoy some of the other family-friendly stays we’ve experienced in Wisconsin. We’ve been fortunate to partner with a few incredible properties that made traveling with a toddler feel easy and special.

You can read about our stays at Seven Acre Dairy Company and at the Harborview in Port Washington for more family getaway inspiration.

Exploring Downtown Viroqua with Kids

One of the best parts about Viroqua is how walkable the downtown area is. Within just a few blocks, you’ll find restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, parks, boutiques, and other family-friendly stops.

We spent most of our weekend simply walking and exploring, which made traveling with a toddler much easier.

Viroqua Food Co-op

If it’s your first time in Viroqua, you should absolutely stop into the Viroqua Food Co-op at 609 N Main St. It’s one of those places that makes your whole trip easier, especially with kids.

They have everything you’d expect like fresh fruit, groceries, beer and wine, plus a full salad bar, hot food bar, and tons of made-to-go options like quinoa salads, penne pasta salads, and other fresh sides. There’s also cafeteria seating, so you can sit down and eat right there.

This place was so convenient for us with a toddler. We stopped in shortly after arriving on Friday for an easy lunch, and then again Saturday night after pizza to walk around and each pick out a little treat. It’s an easy stop right and perfect when you need something quick, affordable, and kid-friendly.

My Wild Child

We recommend stopping into My Wild Child, a thoughtfully curated children’s shop that focuses on natural fibers, outdoor gear, toys, maternity items, and locally made goods. They also offer consignment and even provide free items for new moms. Our son picked out a travel bingo game which we had fun playing with the rest of our trip.

We had also packed Duck-A-Roo with us, which is one of our favorite games to bring along for hotel rooms. If you’re in the toddler stage where easy, low-effort activities are gold, I shared more of our most-used toddler board games here.

Best Restaurants in Viroqua for Families

Viroqua has an impressive food scene, especially for a smaller town. Many restaurants focus on locally sourced ingredients, thanks to the hundreds of organic farms in Vernon County.

Driftless Cafe

We had dinner at Driftless Cafe on Friday night, and it was one of those meals you keep thinking about afterward.

This farm-to-table restaurant focuses on seasonal fresh ingredients, locally sourced food, and you can tell how much care goes into every dish.

They open at 5:00 pm and have limited seating, so reservations are highly recommended. If you can’t get one, they offer a community table option, which is first come, first served. We arrived about 20 minutes early and were able to sit there without an issue.

If you’re visiting Viroqua and looking for amazing food, this is a must-visit restaurant.

Magpie Gelato

Magpie Gelato ended up being one of our personal favorite places and fun stops in Viroqua.

The gelato is excellent, and the prices are so reasonable. I ordered a flight so I could try three flavors, and it came with little waffle cone pieces tucked inside, which was fun. I think our toddler’s scoop was $1.50, which honestly feels unheard of lately.

They also serve good food. My husband ordered the Afjord crepe with goat cheese and sautéed vegetables and he went on and on about how delicious it was.

The part that really makes this spot work for families is the awesome kids’ play area in the corner. There are books, toys, and a play kitchen, and we ended up staying over an hour because our son was completely content. It’s the kind of place where you want to sit for a minute.

Noble Rind Cheese Company

If you love cheese even a little bit, you have to stop at Noble Rind Cheese Company.

They specialize in artisan cheeses and charcuterie, and they encourage sampling. Our toddler loved trying different cheeses, and the staff made it fun and welcoming.

Wonderstate Coffee

If you’re a coffee drinker, make a point to stop at Wonderstate Coffee while you’re downtown. Everything we had was so good, and you can tell they put a lot of care into what they do. They have plenty of seating inside and outside, and it’s located right across from where the farmers market is held in the warmer months, which would be such a fun place to start a summer morning.

This is an easy and reliable first stop before heading out to explore for the day.

Woolly Bear Taphouse

Woolly Bear Taphouse was very family-friendly. They have a back room with plenty of seating and a shelf of games you can borrow, which were enjoyed by kids all around us. The atmosphere was laid back with fun music, and the food is simple with pizza options of sausage or pepperoni and the option to add pickles (must be their thing).

They also have outdoor seating that would be especially great to enjoy in warmer weather.

Kid-Friendly Activities in Viroqua

Eckhart Enchantment

A standout was Eckhart Enchantment, a wooden playground located within Eckhart Park. It’s a classic wooden play structure that encourages open-ended play, and our toddler could have stayed there all day.

Bigley Pool

On Saturday morning, we walked to Bigley Pool, which is located near the local schools.

It was perfect for families. There were designated lap lanes, open swim areas, and toys available like noodles and diving rings.

Even with a birthday party and fitness class happening, there was still plenty of space.

This was an especially great winter activity.

Why Viroqua Is Such a Great Family Getaway

It’s ideal for families looking for:
